Best Tax Countries for Digital Nomads in 2026 (Ranked by Take-Home Pay)

Part of our taxes for digital nomads hub · Updated 2026-07-29

Parent guide: Part of our taxes for digital nomads hub. This ranking shows destinations — the hub explains how nomad taxes work.

There's no universal "best" tax country for digital nomads. The right answer depends on your salary, citizenship, income type, and whether you qualify for special regimes. This guide ranks destinations by modeled take-home pay at two salary tiers — $80,000 and $150,000 — using 2026 tax rules from our methodology.

Important: These rankings assume a single filer with no dependents, standard (non-special-regime) rules unless noted. US citizens still have worldwide filing obligations regardless of destination. Compare your exact scenario →

How we rank

Our rankings use the Domicyle calculator engine:

  • 2026 income tax brackets from published government sources
  • Social contributions (employee or self-employed, as applicable)
  • Special regimes flagged separately (not assumed by default)
  • Net pay = gross salary minus income tax minus employee social contributions

We do not rank on lifestyle, visa ease, or cost of living — tax only. For affordability context, use the move planner.

Ranked by estimated net annual pay (USD, single filer, employee, standard rules):

9Croatia~$58,000~27%YesDigital nomad visa available
10Germany~$52,000~35%NoHigh social contributions

US citizens at $80K: Even in the UAE, you likely still file a US return. FEIE ($130,800 exclusion) may eliminate US tax on earned income, but state residency and SE tax on freelance work still apply. See US digital nomad taxes.

Top destinations at $150,000 salary

Higher earners face progressive brackets and may not qualify for flat-rate regimes:

RankCountryNet pay (approx.)Effective rateNomad visaNotes
1UAE~$142,500~5%YesStill no personal income tax
2Georgia~$135,000–$148,5001–20%Yes1% regime caps at higher revenue thresholds
3Portugal~$105,000–$120,00020–30%YesIFICI 20% flat (eligible) vs standard progressive
4Romania~$120,000~20%NoFlat 10% but social caps apply
5Estonia~$115,000~23%Yes
6Bulgaria~$114,000~24%No
7Spain~$100,000~33%YesBeckham: 24% flat up to €600K (eligible)
8Thailand~$100,000–$115,00015–33%Yes (LTR)
9Croatia~$105,000~30%Yes
10Germany~$90,000~40%No

At $150K, the gap between UAE and Germany exceeds $50,000/year in net pay — but regime eligibility, US filing obligations, and lifestyle costs change the real-world calculation.

Special regimes that change the ranking

Standard rankings understate the benefit of special regimes for eligible nomads:

RegimeCountryRateEligibility summary
IFICI (NHR successor)Portugal20% flatNew tax residents; eligible professions
Beckham LawSpain24% flatNew hires in Spain (not all nomads)
Small business 1%Georgia1%Individual entrepreneurs, revenue caps
LTR visa taxThailand17% flatLong-Term Resident visa holders
Free zoneUAE0%Business structure dependent

These regimes have application requirements, sunset dates, and profession restrictions. Never assume eligibility — verify against current rules on our country pages.

Worked example: $80K in Portugal

ScenarioGrossNet (approx.)Difference
Standard progressive$80,000~$58,000
IFICI (eligible)$80,000~$64,000+$6,000
US citizen + FEIE + IFICI$80,000~$64,000–$68,000Depends on state, SE tax

The IFICI uplift is meaningful but not transformative — and application requires qualifying as a new tax resident with an eligible profession. Run both scenarios in the calculator before planning a move.

Countries that look cheap but aren't

Headline tax rates mislead. Watch for:

Hidden social contributions

Eastern European flat-tax countries (Romania 10%, Bulgaria 10%) add employee + employer social contributions that can push effective rates above 30%. Our calculator includes both.

Substance requirements

UAE and Georgia offer low rates, but banking, business registration, and physical presence requirements create real costs. "0% tax" doesn't mean "0% cost."

US tax layer

For US citizens, a 0% destination doesn't mean 0% total tax. Without FEIE qualification or FTC, US tax applies on top. A $150K earner in UAE who fails the physical presence test could owe significant US tax.

Regime expiration

Portugal's original NHR closed to new applicants; IFICI replaced it with narrower eligibility. Always check current regime status on /methodology.

Compare your salary in the calculator

Rankings show averages. Your situation is specific.

  3. Select citizenship (US persons get FEIE/FTC modeling)
